Calendar
I couldn’t help but notice, while trying to plan my garden planting schedule, that our calendar is messed up. It makes no sense. It is based on nothing, as far as I can tell.
I would like to propose a new Calendar for a new Age of Aquarius.
There are 365 days in a year. 7 days in a week. Why are there 12 months of different sizes? 13 x 28 = 364. There should be 13 months of 28 days each, with a new year’s day that does not belong to any month or week, attached at the beginning. 365 days. Throw a leap day in every 4 years, and there we have it. A calendar where the first of every month is always a Monday. There are four weeks exactly in every month. There is one day which is celebrated on its own, New Year’s Day.
I don’t really like having New Year’s day in the dead of winter. That also makes little sense. I would propose that the Spring equinox should in fact be the first day of the year.
Also, I do not like the names of the days or months. I have a few suggestions for better names. These are obviously only silly examples, but I kind of like them.
Preparid Monday |
Workid Tuesday |
Valid Wednesday |
Perfectid Thursday |
Satisfid Friday |
Restid Saturday |
Inspirid Sunday |
Monday is the day of planning – Preparid
Tuesday is the day of work – Workid
Wednesday is the day of assessment – Valid
Thursday is the day of improvement – Perfectid
Friday is the day of satisfaction – Satisfid
Saturday is the day of rest – Restid
Sunday is the day of inspiration – Inspirid
Since there will be 13 months in this calendar plus one extra day for New Year’s Celebrations. The names I selected for the months are based loosely on Sanskrit, one of the oldest and most enlightened languages known to man.
New Year’s Day – First day of the Year, belonging to no month or week.

Leap Day – Last day of the year, Every fourth year, belonging to no month or week.
Leap Day |
Holiday |
act as 29-Feb |
So, hopefully this calendar makes sense to you. It makes sense to me.
Today would be Inspirid, the 14th of Arthad (Sunday, the 14th day of the last month). In two weeks from tomorrow it would be New Years’s Day.
The names will take a little getting used to, but I feel like this calendar would make time management a little easier and make our weekly expectations of ourselves a little more solid. I would love to hear your comments. Will 2012 be the last year of the Gregorian Calendar?
Ah, harkening back to the pagan calendar — 13 months based on the moon cycle (which is where the word “month” derives)
Does your mind EVER quit churning out interesting ideas?!?
It is said that the most revolutionary thing (besides “living in love”, of course:) is to change the calendar — The Church did it (which is pretty much the one used in the West). The revolutionaries in France did it, briefly. It’s a great way to shake up the status quo, for sure!!!!
2012 seems like a good place to stop using this one. The Alternate Economy is about changing everything else, why not our calendar…
Agreed! For nearly 2 millenia, people have said: BC = before christ & AD = Year of the lord (because they are dating from the birth of Jesus). Non-christians & many scholars have been using: BCE = before the common era & CE = the common era (just to keep the same reference point, w/o the actual reference).
What will we use?? & from what year will we date the before & after?? LIL = living in love……….??
This is quite interesting….
I love that August (my birth month) would be the month of generosity! HAHA!!!
That means you should be VERY generous indeed! 😉
And my birthday would fall under the month of Joy, because everyone is so damn happy I was born…
You want to see people tear each other apart and the world crumble even faster than it is now? Screw with the calendar, lol! I would be SOOOOO confused for a VERY long time if anything were to change. Remember how long it took us to understand the calendar when we were little? Now imagine that all over again PLUS the fact that we’re older with slower brains than when we were little.
Having said that, you HAVE put a lot of effort into making this calendar, lol. Good job!
I didn’t put that much effort into it… I was bored this morning and woke up with an inspiration… lol.
Eh, it looked like you did, but no matter… it was a fun thing to do
that’s the lunar calendar
most of the pre-history world followed that calendar, it was more appropriate to agriculture
I don’t think mine is particularly original. What is our current one based on? Madness?
roman gods
oh ok… madness.
I don’t want to nitpick, but because it is in the month my birthday would fall under, I feel obligated to point out that the sanskrit “Vipad” doesn’t have very good translations. It quite literally translates to: misfortune, death, accident, ruin, failure, adversity, calamity and going wrongly. I guess you could consider “death” the ultimate “ease”, though.
As I said, they are loosely based. I am impressed with your knowledge of Sanskrit… lol. The word I used was Avipad which means “no calamity, ease”, but every word seemed to start with the letter “A” so I dropped the “A’s” from most of them. I am not a scholar of Sanskrit, but used a dictionary… I guess dropping the “A” changes the meaning significantly… lol. oops.
PS- I’m happy you were born 😉
You’re funny. The Romans used to add months or weeks to their calendar when they run out of time and things to do. I like the months names.
Yes, I heard they would use a leap month instead of a leap year, but it interfered with office terms, so never actually got instituted. Gotta love the Romans for all the wisdom they have left us… thanks for the positive comment!
No,no, no, they actually implemented it. They had a name for it. My Roman history is rusty but I know the emperor could at his whim extend the year to fit with his plans, usually war plans.
maybe it was the other way around. I am rusty too. It would make more sense that they would use it too often in order to extend their terms…
Kate Shrewsday blogged about the French revision of the calendar until Napoleon squished it. Their decimal system was high on logic but miserable in practice.
Twelve thirties are fine, but weekends should revolve like shipboard watch systems, on a ten-day week where one works six days and gets three off.
Like other people mentioned this would be a Lunar calendar or Moon calendar based on 13 months of 28 days, like the Hebrew and Mayan calendars. In your case, your calendar would start on the Spring Equinox (March 20 or 21) for the Northern Hemisphere and Autumn Equinox for the Southern Hemisphere. In Western Tropical Astrology, the vernal equinox (March 20 or 21) marks the first point or start of Aries. That is the first day of the Iranian calendar. It is also a holiday celebrated in many different cultures around the world, like the Middle East, Central Asia, and the Americas.
ha ha, I like names given by you like Inspirid, restid, satisfid. Hindoos celebrate their festivals according to the lunar calender and there is in fact an added month known as ” Adhik(more) Maas(month)”. also the new year is according to the fresh harvest and crop generally in March/April.
Though all of us also have the New year celebrations on 31st December because of the western influence on our country and also because there is nothing else except partying to be done on that day
i like your idea of changing it back to 13 months, and the names of your months would be nice too. it would keep people thinking good thoughtsand about moving foward. rather than dwelling on the bad.
