Living in Love Award: Updated
Since posting this Award I have received a large volume of participants, but I now realize that the rules may have been a bit vague. I will continue to run this Award, but will tighten the rules slightly so as to ensure that I can keep up with the submissions.
Since starting this blog I have received several awards. Each one comes with a stipulation to pass it on to others in large quantities.
I have decided that I do not really want to do this… sorry.
Instead, I am going to announce a new Award. One that I have created. This one will be a little different. It does not require that you pass it on. It does require that you meet certain conditions for it! If you receive it, it also comes with a prize.
So, here we go.
I would like to announce the Living in Love Award.
How do I receive this Award?
If you would like to receive this award, you will be expected to perform three tasks and send an email to awards@alternate-economy.com. Only entries sent to awards@alternate-economy.com will be considered.
1) Please send me one essay of 500 words (approx.) describing one Random Act of Kindness that you have performed since learning of this Award. If you are worried it may take time to find an opportunity, do not fear, there are literally millions of opportunities out there for kindness.
2) One thing the Alternate Economy is all about is sharing our excess. Take a look in your closet, pantry, basement. What do you have too much of? Who could use it more than you? Please send one email of 500 words (approx.) indicating a donation, not of money, but of items and who they were donated too. It could be a friend, or a neighbour or the local shelter. But I want to hear how you have shared of your excess.
3) Finally, I want your thoughts. I want your knowledge. I want your perspective. Please write one essay of 1000 words (approx.) dedicated to the topic of Love. Define what it means for you. How you wish to live better within it. And what you plan to do with it today. I would like this to be a unique piece, written in response to this Award.

1) You will receive 3 guest spots on this blog to feature your works! My blog has around 1,200 followers, and I will give you my audience to show off your ability to live in Love. You can write new pieces, or use ones that you love from the past. It is totally up to you. My blog is yours!
2) You will also receive 1 guest post written for your blog, by me. This will be a unique piece and the topic is your choice! I will not post it on my blog, only on yours!

I recently spent time judging an essay contest that our local library is hosting to promote reading. Students from all grade levels were welcome to participate. My time, talent and abundance is shared wherever the needs are in my locality. 🙂
In a couple of weeks I will be teaching a class to inspire others through art and writing. And this summer I have been invited to speak in a Teleconference Series on Promoting the Well-being of Children. I will be speaking around the topic of bullying and how to address it.

Hey, I think it is great what you are doing. In 2008 I wrote a blog to raise awareness for a woman, who had suffered from cancer and was teated in the UK for it, but because of her financial situation she couldn’t support herself anymore and was about to be deported to Africa. I wrote a blog and i called the news paper regarding this article just stating that maybe they could make an appeal, so Ama Sumani would find people who#d help her out of the situation. And in the end someone was found who paid the rest of her treatment…
Thought I’d share this with you, as you might be glad to see the impact love (on blogs) can make.

I donate my time to causes, especially those that revolve around people and their thoughts, feelings etc. I encourage and mentor every chance I get and am every ones cheerleader.
I create a newsletter for the company I work for, this month i encouraged hundreds of clinic patients to “spring clean” their cupboards and donate the excess to a food bank.
Love is easy to define, it has no limitations, it just “is” whether you agree with the one you share love towards or not. Love is acceptance of the human spirit in all it’s horror and happiness.

I appreciate your enthusiasm and I am sure you are worthy of the award. The point of this blog and the Living in Love Challenge, is to take the time to sit down and consider what Love really means. Although the first two steps can technically be past deeds, the idea is to show what you are doing today to Live in Love. As for the third step, it is essential that you write a new and unique piece on the topic of Love that I can post on my blog.

Love this. Our family mission is to live daily in love. I would not be likely to blog about what we have given or done as it is just our lifestyle and don’t believe in doing things for recognition/acknowlegement etc… I sure do love the idea of everyone blogging about giving though!! Inspiring. 🙂
I always donate to the salvation army and goodwill. I just can’t get myself to throw things out if someone else can get a use out of it. When I recently closed my cupcake store, due to my high risk pregnancy, I donated tons of flour, sugar, spices etc to my friends when I could have sold it. I think your bloggin award is a neat idea. We need more humanity and kindness in the world. 🙂
I had your post in mind when I was writing my latest post. I was originally going to donate my hair without publicizing it but then I thought it was too good of an opportunity to get others to join in and give back. And, what better way to give back selflessly than donating something so personal as your very own hair? And just like love, this contest has no expiration date. 🙂

I love your whole blog. It prompted me to think more deeply about something I am currently experimenting with on mine.
You refer to things – but I’d like to expand that definition: what about sharing, thoughts and emotions, the light and the dark? And in the process of such a sharing: neutralising the fear, rivalry and craving that drives excessive consumption?
I wanted to write this to posit that it’s not things that create compassionate connection, but the common human journey with all its trials and tribulations, ups and downs. To create an alternative economy, people need to learn to love and trust each other again (not JUST the economic system) gradually building up to loving and trusting others. This would be the biggest gift humanity can give to itself – and with that love and trust – halt the current trajectory of our bio-sphere into a poisoned, depleted end…
1. Everyday I send lovingkindness to those people I struggle with. By doing this, I’ve actually changed a relationship with a person I previously just did not get on with at all. I extended them lovingkindness first in mind, then in feeling and finally in person – not by any shift other than the increased relaxation I felt towards this person. In return they relaxed, tension was alleviated. It’s not as if we have become bosom buddies but kindnesses have been shared. Imagine if world powers did this.
2. I have shared the time that I have struggled with self in my blog. I doubted this, and began to think I shouldn’t. In response, some of my modest following have said how that sharing of these seemingly superfluous experiences inspired them, helped them to feel less lonely. It encouraged me to donate more of my own story and continue developing the feeling of community – across oceans. Imagine if politicians did this.
3. The biggest thing I have learned on my journey of meditation (3 months so far out of a year’s journey) is that before I can share anything, I must and need to love myself. The 10 – 30 minutes I spend a day meditating is my gift of love to myself. I have been getting to know what I’m made up of. I’ve been learning how my thoughts and feelings interact. In understanding myself, I’ve started to realise that others live in the same painful states, a perspective that spontaneously draws out the compassion I have already in my heart. I’ve directly experienced a moment of heart-centred compassion and love… and I have increased my capacity to both show love, and receive it – not an easy journey having survived several of life’s big traumas.
Love needs first to be demystified and expectations need to be dropped – and exercised in mind, heart and body everyday.
Thanks for this post – it really made me examine my own journey, and commit more deeply to it. I’m going to turn this comment into a post on my blog, and reference you.

No.s 1 & 2…I have reservations over. And here is why:
I believe that if you do good, an act of kindness, you do it without expecting anything in return.
Now, I realize that I am also heavily influenced by my Catholic Christian upbringing which tells me that:
“But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your alms may be done in secret; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you (Matthew 6:3-4).”
Thus, that is why I personally have issues. But I commend you for doing your part in making the world a better place! ♥

Modesty has its place in a world where generosity is the norm. We do not live in that world. Perhaps it is time to start talking about our generous acts, not so as to get something in return, but instead to encourage others to join in.
